The States Where Statistically Your Marriage Will Not Last

This year’s divorce season had a high-profile start, with the January announcement from Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos that he and wife MacKenzie Bezos are divorcing. Divorce rates in the Bezos’ home state of Washington are close to the national average: For every 1,000 married individuals over age 15 in the U.S., about 11.67 individuals divorced over the span of a year, according to estimates from the 2017 American Community Survey. In Washington, the divorce rate was 12.06 per 1,000 married people. Generally, married individuals are less likely to get divorced in states where marriage is less common.
